Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

Ascension welcomes all those who turn to the Catholic Church seeking Baptism.   Through the catechumenate, as described in the RCIA, unbaptized people are formed in the faith and welcomed into the community of believers. The process is tailored to the person who asks for Baptism but is usually about 2 years.  Adults usually enter their final time of preparation during the Season of Lent and are baptized at the Easter Vigil.

Adults baptized in other Christian communities who wish to become Catholic are also welcomed through a Rite of Reception.  Again the process is tailored to the individual asking to become Catholic.  The Rite requires a “period of probation” for those who are fully formed as Christian disciples of Christ.  Adults are received throughout the liturgical year based on their readiness and formation.

Some adults, baptized as infants in the Catholic faith, have never received any formal teaching or formation in their Catholic faith.  For these individuals a process closer to the Catechumenate is recommended so there is ample time to understand the faith and begin to live as a Catholic with participation in weekly Mass and learning other traditions of the Church. Being confirmed and receiving First Eucharist is often celebrated at the Easter Vigil but may be celebrated at other feasts or when the Bishop comes to confirm.

Catechists and sponsors are invited and encouraged to accompany those interested in these journeys.

Adult Confirmation

Catholic adults who are practicing the faith and who have received their First Communion, but who have never been confirmed are invited to participate in the Archdiocesan Adult Confirmation program. Preparation classes and celebrations of Confirmation take place in several areas of the Archdiocese each year.

Congratulations to our Initiates!

With Easter joy we continue to pray for our newest members of the faith! For our newly initiated, Jackson, Olivia, Owen, Charlie, Daria, Jeffrey, Mia and AnaMaria, that as recipients and witnesses of God’s love and mercy they may continue to grow in faith and understanding.
