Ascension also offers the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program for children ages 4-12. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd came about through the work of two Roman Catholic laywomen in Rome: Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi. They were inspired by the educational principles of Maria Montessori. The materials they prepared for children, since 1954, were based on the Bible, the Roman Catholic liturgy and sacraments, and Church teachings. The children meet in multi-age levels: 4-6 year olds (Level I), 7-9 year olds (Level II), and 9-12 year olds (Level III). This Montessori based approach to religious education takes place in a setting call an Atrium. This space includes materials that the children use for learning and reflection. It also provides a space for prayer.
